GTIN Barcodes
GTIN Barcodes is a newer phrase for barcode. It stands for Global Trade Item Number. GTIN are assigned for retail purposes. This is a term used largely by GS1 and can refer to a variety of different retail environment barcodes.
The term “GTIN” was introduced to standardise product identification across global supply chains. Previously, terms like EAN (European Article Number) and UPC (Universal Product Code) were used regionally. However, as businesses expanded internationally, the need for a unified system became apparent.
As consumer expectations evolve, there’s a growing demand for more detailed product information, such as origin, ingredients, and sustainability practices. Traditional 1D barcodes, while effective for basic identification, have limited capacity to store this additional data. This limitation has led to the adoption of 2D barcodes, which can encode significantly more information in a compact space. Unlike standard QR codes, 2D barcodes are designed to be scanned at points of sale, providing both detailed product information and the convenience of traditional barcode scanning. New Zealand is working towards ensuring that all retail point-of-sale systems in the country can scan 2D barcodes by the end of 2027, aiming to enhance product traceability, food safety, and consumer engagement. The term GTIN is normally followed by a number. The number refers to the number of digits in the barcode. For example, a GTIN-13 is an EAN-13 barcode.
