Barcode Number Search
Getting more information from a barcode
Barcode database sites or apps search the internet for information about a particular barcode. The returned information is generally company name and/or contact details, relevant product information. Some searches can list where you can purchase the product.
You can search for an EAN-13 or UPC barcode on various sites or apps (such as International Barcodes Database, IBNREG, or using smartphone apps). If you own a barcode number, and no results are found when you run a search, you can have your barcode registered to ensure your information is displayed when searched.
You can also use the IBNREG search function on our site here.
Understanding Barcode Searching and Product Information
Barcodes are essential tools in modern commerce, enabling efficient tracking and management of products. However, it’s important to understand that barcodes themselves do not contain detailed product information. Instead, they encode a unique identifier—a number that corresponds to a specific product in a retailer’s or manufacturer’s database.
When a barcode is scanned, the scanner reads this unique number and queries a connected database to retrieve associated product details such as name, price, and description. This process allows for quick and accurate transactions at points of sale and facilitates inventory management.
The reliance on external databases means that barcode scanning does not inherently provide information about the product; it merely serves as a gateway to access such data stored elsewhere. This is why barcode searching involves looking up the scanned number in a database to obtain the corresponding product information.
In summary, while barcodes are crucial for product identification and tracking. Their primary function is to link to a database where detailed product information is stored, ensuring efficient and accurate product management.
