A barcode number search (EAN‑13, UPC, GTIN) enables you to enter the numeric code printed under the barcode and retrieve associated product or company information. A barcode number serves as a unique identifier for a product. The actual product data is stored in external databases. Barcodes themselves do not contain product information.

If you register the barcode (GTIN) in online databases, you can retrieve information such as the company name, product details, and even where to purchase the product. If no one has registered the GTIN online, your search won’t return any information. This is fairly common as many manufacturers do not register information against their barcode numbers. This is especially the case for older products that were developed before internet databases and smart phones.

It is important to note that there isn’t one complete worldwide barcode database. There are many databases. Some databases allow updates from the barcode owner. Sadly one of the largest global barcode databases is out of date and doesn’t allow updates to show accurate information.
